An architect's home and studio at the edge of Shola forest, to escape the Delhi summer.
This holiday home and studio, designed by Fuzzy Boundaries, is located on a quiet, sloping site in Coonoor. Conceived as a personal retreat and workspace for an architect, the project explores themes of landscape, material honesty, and spatial clarity.
The design responds to the natural terrain and climate of the Nilgiris, employing a restrained palette of local stone, timber, and exposed concrete. Large apertures frame expansive views, introduce abundant natural light, and foster a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors.
The studio—set slightly apart from the main residence—provides a contemplative space for design work, while the home remains informal and warm, designed for rest, reflection, and gathering.
The studio—set slightly apart from the main residence—provides a contemplative space for design work, while the home remains informal and warm, designed for rest, reflection, and gathering. Together, the structures embody Fuzzy Boundaries’ approach to architecture: contextual, quiet, and grounded in a sensitivity to both people and place.
Though modest in size at just 2,000 square feet, the home feels generous thanks to a network of verandahs, courtyards, and in-between spaces that extend the experience of living beyond the built envelope. The design works with the contours of the land, carefully minimising cut and fill, and creating a spatial richness that belies its compact footprint.
